I have always worked with children whether that be as a nanny, swimming instructor or netball coach. As I am also a lover of dressing up and being on stage, this job seemed like the natural (and most fun) progression. I’m also a (fledgling) medieval historian which is not necessarily something that you see a lot of but if anyone wants a medieval or any history themed party, I’m your girl! I’m also a bit of an exercise lover and keep my medieval history brain alert by running, lifting heavy things and doing Krav Maga. If anyone wants a self defence party, I’m also your girl there too!
I love looking at the birthday child’s face when I arrive at their party as their favourite character. They are so excited and it so much fun to then carry that level of excitement through the whole party. The kids honestly believe you are that character and to see them so happy and that thrilled to have you there on their birthday is always the best part.
My favourite character to dress up as is definitely a fairy as you don’t have to stick to movie or T.V. show plot and can make up absolutely any back story for yourself when the kids ask you questions. I love coming up with stories about where I come from and who my fairy friends are and the kids always love hearing these new tales that they haven’t heard before. Also, the fairy costume is pretty cool even if the glitter stays on my face for days.
One of my favourite memories is doing the magic trick where the kids magically put drawings and colours into the book. After the trick, this one little girl looked up to the sky wistfully and said to herself ‘I always knew magic was real.’ I felt a bit guilty that it was just a trick but then I though the longer she believes in magic, the better off she’ll be.
I love that we are all quite similar and that when we work together we are all just trying to make a child’s birthday the most exciting it can possibly be. It doesn’t matter who you get paired with because you know that whoever it is, the party is going to be great fun!
